A virtual machine is software that’s capable of executing programs as if it were a physical machine—it’s a computer within a computer. A virtual machine (VM) is a software implemented abstraction of the underlying hardware, which is presented to the application layer of the system. Virtual machines may be based on specifications of a hypothetical computer or emulate the computer architecture and functions of a real world computer.
